Tools Organiser – 3D CAD Model

I designed this tools organiser as a CAD project to create a more organised and accessible storage solution for tools in a Design & Technology workshop. The main problem was that tools were often returned randomly, making them difficult to find and creating unnecessary clutter.

To begin the project, I considered the different tools that needed to be stored and how frequently they were used. I then developed a modular layout with dedicated compartments for different tool types, while keeping the overall design compact and easy to access.

I modelled the organiser in 3D CAD, developing the individual compartments and structural components separately before assembling them into the final design. Throughout the process, I adjusted dimensions and spacing to ensure that the tools could be stored securely without wasting space.

The final CAD model helped me understand how compartmentalisation, dimensions, accessibility and material efficiency can be combined to create a practical workshop storage solution.

1. Identified the Problem

I identified that tools in the workshop were often returned randomly, making them difficult to locate and creating an untidy workspace.

2. Defined the Objective

My objective was to design a compact and organised storage system that could hold different tools in dedicated spaces while keeping them easy to access.

3. Planned the Layout

I first considered the types and sizes of tools that needed to be stored. I then planned the arrangement of compartments to make efficient use of the available space.

4. Created the Main Structure

I began modelling the main body of the organiser, establishing the overall dimensions and proportions of the storage unit.

5. Designed the Tool Compartments

Separate compartments were modelled for different tools. The dimensions of each section were adjusted according to the size and shape of the tools they were intended to hold.

6. Added Labels and Organisation

I incorporated labelled sections to make it easier to identify where each tool should be returned. This helped improve organisation and reduce the time spent searching for tools.

7. Assembled the Components

After modelling the individual sections, I combined them into a complete CAD assembly. I checked that the compartments aligned correctly and that there were no unnecessary overlaps.

8. Checked Accessibility

I reviewed the model from different angles to ensure that the tools could be removed and returned easily. I also checked that the layout remained practical when multiple tools were stored.

9. Refined the Design

I adjusted the dimensions, compartment spacing and overall proportions to improve the functionality of the organiser. These refinements helped make the design more compact and practical.

10. Completed the Final Model

The final 3D CAD model demonstrates a structured and functional tools organiser designed specifically for workshop use. Through this project, I developed my understanding of CAD modelling, spatial planning, compartment design, dimensions and product organisation.
