Swan Turbine Services specialises in the repair, refurbishment, inspection, and maintenance of industrial steam turbines used across power generation and manufacturing industries. During my internship, I gained first-hand exposure to turbine engineering, precision measurement, quality control, and industrial manufacturing standards. Working alongside experienced engineers and technicians allowed me to understand how engineering drawings are translated into real components while maintaining strict quality and safety requirements.

Throughout the internship, I worked with the Design Engineering and Quality Control departments. This experience provided valuable insight into turbine construction, engineering documentation, inspection techniques, precision measurement, and internationally recognised manufacturing standards. It strengthened both my technical knowledge and practical engineering skills.

Precision measurement plays a critical role in turbine manufacturing and maintenance, where even the smallest dimensional error can affect performance and safety. During this part of my internship, I learned how to accurately measure engineering components using a range of precision instruments.

I gained practical experience using Vernier calipers, micrometers, screw gauges, and height gauges, working with both metric and industrial measurement systems. Under the guidance of experienced engineers, I learned how to select the appropriate measuring instrument, interpret readings accurately, and verify that manufactured components complied with specified tolerances. This significantly improved my understanding of dimensional inspection and engineering accuracy.

My experience in the Design Department

The Design Department was responsible for interpreting engineering drawings and ensuring every component met the required specifications before manufacturing or refurbishment. During my time with the design team, I learned how to read and understand technical engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, symbols, and manufacturing notes.

I gained a detailed understanding of steam turbine construction and operation, learning about the function of major components such as the turbine rotor, blades, shafts, and casings. Engineers explained the importance of blade angles, blade profiles, and the specialised terminology used throughout the turbine industry. This experience gave me a much stronger appreciation of how precise engineering design directly influences the efficiency, reliability, and performance of rotating machinery.

My Experience in the Quality Control (QC) Department

The Quality Control Department ensures that every component meets strict engineering and safety standards before being approved for service. During my time in QC, I observed how inspection procedures are used to identify manufacturing defects and maintain high product reliability.

I was introduced to non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT). I learned how Ultrasonic Testing is used to detect internal cracks and material defects without damaging the component, while Dye Penetrant Testing helps identify small surface cracks that may not be visible to the naked eye. Observing these inspection techniques demonstrated how quality assurance plays a critical role in preventing equipment failure and ensuring long-term operational safety.

Understanding ISO Standards and Workplace Safety

One of the most valuable aspects of the internship was learning how internationally recognised ISO standards guide manufacturing and quality management throughout the industry. I gained an understanding of how standardised procedures improve consistency, traceability, documentation, and overall product quality.

I also learned about workplace safety practices, industrial risk management, and labour regulations that help create a safe working environment for employees. This reinforced the importance of following engineering procedures, maintaining accurate documentation, and prioritising safety alongside technical performance.

Skills Gained

This internship significantly expanded my understanding of industrial engineering and turbine technology. I developed practical skills in interpreting engineering drawings, precision measurement, dimensional inspection, turbine component identification, and quality assurance procedures. I also gained valuable exposure to non-destructive testing methods, ISO quality standards, industrial safety practices, and professional engineering workflows.

Most importantly, the experience strengthened my interest in Mechanical Engineering by showing how design, manufacturing, inspection, and quality control work together to produce reliable, high-performance industrial equipment. It reinforced the importance of precision, attention to detail, and continuous improvement within modern engineering industries.
