During my internship at Kirby Building Systems, I gained practical exposure to the fabrication and construction of pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB). I learned how large structural systems are designed, fabricated, assembled, and prepared for installation. The experience helped me understand how individual steel components are manufactured and integrated to form strong and efficient industrial structures.

Understanding Structural Fabrication

I learned about the fabrication process involved in producing major structural components used in pre-engineered buildings. This included understanding how steel sections are cut, shaped, assembled, and prepared to meet specific structural requirements. I also gained insight into how different structural members work together to create a stable and load-bearing building system.

Exploring Structural Connections

One of the most interesting aspects of my experience was learning about the smaller components that hold large structures together. I was introduced to various structural connections and fastening systems, including anchor bolts, bolts, plates, and other connection components. I learned how these parts are positioned and used to connect structural members securely and ensure the overall stability of the building.

Industrial Welding and Assembly

I gained an understanding of how industrial welding processes are used in structural steel fabrication. I observed how different steel components are aligned, joined, and welded to create strong structural assemblies. This helped me understand the importance of accurate fabrication, proper welding techniques, and quality control when manufacturing components that must withstand significant structural loads.

Cold Forming and Steel Components

I was also introduced to the cold-forming process, where steel sheets are shaped into specific profiles without being heated to high temperatures. I learned how cold-formed sections can be produced with precise dimensions and used as lighter structural components in building systems. Understanding this process gave me a better appreciation of how manufacturing techniques can improve material efficiency while maintaining structural performance.

Skills and Knowledge Gained

This experience strengthened my understanding of structural engineering, steel fabrication, industrial welding, cold forming, and construction processes. I developed a better understanding of how large-scale industrial structures are built from individual components and how precision, material selection, and reliable connections contribute to structural integrity.

Most importantly, the internship allowed me to connect theoretical engineering concepts with real-world industrial applications. It gave me valuable exposure to the manufacturing side of structural engineering and deepened my interest in understanding how engineering design, fabrication, and construction work together to create large-scale industrial structures.
